New year’s intentions
Friday, January 1st, 2010I hope the new year will bring us many fresh and inspiring pictures. In order to bring my photography to a new level these are my new year’s intentions:
- To kick it off I should update the News category more often which is what I’m doing right now.
- Be a little less shy and just ask people if I can take a picture
- Do more promotional work for 1pictureaday
- Don’t focus on equipment although….I want to…
- Buy a new point & shoot camera, probably the Canon G11
- Create pictures which tell a story, bring up emotions, are relevant & are effective
- Do a quick reset of my camera BEFORE doing a shoot, especially bracketing, metering & ISO values
- Do more walks early in the morning, which means I have to wake up & go OUT of the bed when the alarm is ringing!
- Move closer to the subject
- Make a decision of if/how/where/why/when/what/who to sell my pictures
- Actually read the books I buy
- Take less “window view” pictures, although sometimes this is inevitable like last week when I was sick.
- Go to more exhibitions and/or workshops
- Do more research
- Spend less time in front of the TV, checking analytics/email/twitter/flickr notifications
Of course I can’t fullfill all of them, but writing a post about it makes me more aware of them. And of course I should not forget that I’m doing this for the joy of creating something that, existed for just a split second, will exist for eternity.
We’ll see what the new year is going to bring wish you all a very good one!!!
New theme/site
Monday, December 28th, 2009The last week I’ve been busy building a new theme for 1pictureaday.com. I was not satisfied anymore with the ePhoto theme. I liked the design but to me the deisgn was a little bit over the top. Also what freaked me was that when browsing the archives, the thumbnails sometimes didn’t load. This was because they were created at runtime. Yes they stayed in a temporarily buffer so the homepage was always pretty much ’safe’ but the archive was sometimes a problem where you wouldn’t see the thumbnails showing up. Only after a few refreshess.
So now I’m using the new capabilities of wordpress 2.9 which luckily came out two weeks ago. I’m using the new thumbnail feature quite heavily. All the different sizes of the images are now created during the upload of the picture so they’re always there and not created at runtime.
I’ll probably be updating my site with new features in the next few days. I just couldn’t wait anymore to release it. My plan was to release it in the new year but I think I’m far enough for an earlier release. Hope you’ll enjoy it more and that my site will be faster, more accessible and have better user experience. I wanted it to be about the pictures and not about the design of the site.
Oh yeah you can use the arrow keys to easily browse all the pages and pictures, just press them and you’ll see what happens…. I will address this more in the site lay-out in the future just don’t know where to put a ‘Tip’ container yet…
This is war, Robert Capa at Work exhibition
Saturday, October 24th, 2009Today I visited the “This is war, Robert Capa at Work” exhibition at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam. I also participated in the History of photojournalism workshop which was a good combination and a nice way to visit an exhibition. The host of the lecture was Annette Behrens. A lot of photojournalists were reviewed and there were books lying on the table of the photographers which were reviewed (in no particular order):
- Mathew Brady
- Henri Cartier-Bresson
- Robert Capa/Gerda Taro
- Cas Oorthuys
- Martin Parr
- Bertien van Manen
- Boris Mikhailov
- Ad van Denderen Go no Go project See the book over here
- Geert van Kesteren
- Simon Norfolk
- Broomberg&Chanarin
- Alfredo Jaar
- Hans Aarsman See some books (online) over here
It was a day full of impressive imagery a bit overwhelming now and then but definitely worth the little trip to Rotterdam.
And ater the exhibition I went for a little walk and took this picture. Rotterdam is a very photographic city.
Blog updated but my Macbook Pro not repaired (yet)
Sunday, September 13th, 2009I finally took the time and installed Lightroom on my Macbook from work. I’ve made the correct settings to export the pictures and I’m ready to roll. My own Macbook is still at the repairshop I’m in a conflict as to how much I need to pay to repair it. They want me to pay 750,- euro’s for a 3000,- 2yr old Macbook Pro. I don’t want to pay more than 300,- . Hope this is solved soon…
- UPDATE – 23-09-2009
I wrote a letter to the repairshop (iCentre) http://www.icentre.nl/ which is also the place where I bought it. They wrote me an e-mail back two days later saying that I will get a full repair at no extra charge. I’m very happy with it of course. It’s only a bit strange that (or maybe not so) I had to take these steps in order to get my Macbook repaired at no charge. http://www.consuwijzer.nl was very helpfull. They made me realize that I’m in my right to get a full repair at no charge. So now I will have to wait for the Logicboard to arrive at the repairshop which can take two weeks because it wasn’t in stock…
Computer crash
Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009My Macbook Pro crashed yesterday. It justed stopped working. Today I brought to a repair centre and they were pretty sure it was a problem with the videocard from Ati. In that case they will replace it with a new one for no cost. So I hope that’s the case. It’s a big miss but I still have my good old PC standing on the closet for cases like this. I will not be able to process my pictures the way I used to do on my Macbook so there will be no updates in the follwing days. But of course I will take pictures so I will post them all at once when I have my Macbook back which I hope will be in the beginning of next week.
Stay tuned!!
Moved the photo’s to full blown wordpress blog
Tuesday, July 14th, 2009While i liked tumblr and the combination with flickr. I knew that something was missing. I was unhappy with how you could navigate the photo’s especially when the photo’s were older than let’s say a month or so. I was unable to give the photo’s I liked a little more attention. And of course there’s more possible with wordpress then with tumblr, although I like the simplicity of tumblr…
